Bastiaan har en doktorgrad i evolusjonsbiologi. Hans nøkkelkompetanse innenfor VKMs fagområder er handel med CITES-listede arter med fokus på sjøpattedyr og bruk av DNA-teknikker for å bestemme den geografiske opprinnelsen til biologisk materiale fra museumssamlinger.
