Assessment: Import Tolerance for Oxathiapiprolin in Potatoes
Commissioned: 22.01.2026
Publishing: 22.02.2028
Hovedbudskap:
The Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food and Environment (VKM) will assess the maximum residue level (MRL) for oxathiapiprolin in potatoes, based on approved use in the United States.
The assessment is commissioned by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet) and will be carried out in collaboration with EFSA, the European Food Safety Authority.
Strict Regulations for Plant Protection Products
Oxathiapiprolin is a fungicide used against various fungal diseases on potatoes and other vegetables.
Residues of plant protection products in food may pose a risk to public health. Therefore, the EU and Norway share an extensive regulatory framework for the approval and use of plant protection products, as well as for residues of these products in food and feed. The evaluation and approval of active substances and the establishment of MRLs (maximum residue levels) for pesticides in food are carried out jointly at the EU level to ensure that residue levels in food are safe for consumers and that plant protection products are used legally.
In connection with the evaluation of active substances, EU Member States or Norway may be appointed as the Rapporteur Member State (RMS) for those substances. Norway is designated as the RMS for the assessment of MRLs for oxathiapiprolin in the EU.
Oxathiapiprolin was introduced in the EU for use as an active substance in plant protection products in 2017. The approval for its use expires in March 2027. Active substances are generally approved for a period of 10 years, and it is possible to apply for renewal.
Products containing oxathiapiprolin are approved for use in Norway.
Import Tolerance
EU import tolerances are the maximum permitted levels of pesticide residues established for agricultural and food products imported into the EU, to facilitate international trade.
An import tolerance may be established when:
- an active substance is not approved in the EU (provided there are no public health concerns), or
- a higher MRL than the one applicable in the EU is appropriate for a specific product, provided that the EU has not set a lower MRL for reasons of public health.
