What is EFSA and how is VKM affiliated with them?

EFSA, the European Food Safety Authority, works to improve food security, protect consumers and maintain confidence in EU food production.

With increasing cross-border trade, international cooperation is absolutely essential to safeguarding food and the environment.

VKM is a Norwegian contact point for EFSA, and VKM's director is a permanent Norwegian representative in EFSA's advisory body, the Advisory Forum. As a point of contact, VKM shall promote the exchange of information and knowledge between EFSA and the member countries and contribute to joint projects. In addition, VKM will work to make EFSA's work visible in Norway.

EFSA conducts risk assessments and provides advice to the European Commission, the European Parliament and Member States, regarding:

  • foodborne diseases
  • nutrition and nutrients
  • pollutants
  • genetically modified organisms
  • animal health and animal welfare
  • plant health
  • pesticides
  • production and distribution of food
