CITES
The main task of the Panel is to assess whether international trade in endangered and vulnerable species listed under the CITES convention is detrimental to the continued survival of these species.
VKM is the Norwegian Scientific Authority for the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). VKM prepares scientific assessments for the Norwegian Environment Agency, the national management authority under CITES. The Environment Agency uses VKM’s assessments to make decisions about trade in the species covered by the convention, such as granting import or export permits.

How we assess risk
To assess risk means to evaluate how likely it is that a known hazard will cause harm. In addition, we must assess how serious the harm is.
Independent and transparent
The Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food and Environment (VKM) carries out independent risk assessments for the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet) and the Norwegian Environment Agency (Miljødirektoratet).
