Genetically Modified Organisms
The panel on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) carries out health and environmental risk assessments of genetically modified organisms, processed food and feed on behalf of the Norwegian Foood Safety Authority and the Norwegian Environment Agency. The panel mostly discusses applications for authorisation which are on the agenda of the European Food Safety Authority, EFSA, and where each country in the European Economic Area (EEA) may comment during a three month period. Additionally, the panel carries out risk assessments in connection with national applications for GMOs.

Assessing risk means assessing how likely it is that a hazard we know leads to injury. In addition, we need to assess how serious the injury is.
VKM is appointed by the Ministry of Health and Care Services. VKM is organized as an independent body, fulfilling the national requirement for independent, transparent and open scientific risk assessments.
Risk assessments in VKM follow current international standards and methodology in the respective fields of responsibility for VKMs panels.
