Risk assessment of genetically modified carnation FLO-40685-2 (notification C/NL/13/02)

The Norwegian Environment Agency has requested the Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food Safety (VKM) to provide a scientific opinion on the notification C/NL/13/02 from Suntory Holding Ltd submitted under Part C of EU Directive 2001/18. The scope of notification C/NL/13/02 covers import, distribution and retailing of cut flowers of genetically modified carnation FLO-40685-1 for ornamental use in the EU/European Economic Area (EEA).
The flower petals of carnation FLO-40685-2 have a modified deep purple colour whereas the parental variety (cream Cinderella) has white flowers. The altered colour results from the expression of two newly introduced genes from Petunia x hybrida and Viola hortensis, respectively. The genes encode the enzymes dihydroflavonol 4-reductase (DFR) and flavonoid 3′,5′-hydroxylase (F3′5′H) that enable biosynthesis of the anthocyanidins (pigments) delphinidin and cyanidin in the flower petals. Carnation FLO-40685-2 also contains a mutated herbicide tolerance gene from Nicotiana tabacum, encoding the enzyme acetolactate synthase (ALS), used to facilitate the selection of GM plantlets during the genetic transformation process.
