Microplastics - occurrence and implications for food safety and environment in Norway

Report no:

Ordered: 24.11.2017

Publishing: 21.10.2019

Key message:

The Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food and Environment (VKM) will summarize the status of knowledge on the presence of microplastics in the environment and possible consequences on land, in water, and for food safety in Norway.

There is a global interest and concern about the possible impact of plastic waste on land, in waterways and in the ocean. Small plastic particles, "microplastics", are widelyspread in the environment and can potentially harm organisms and ecosystems.

Possible implications for food resources, the environment and human health in Norway have not been assessed. Thus, VKM consider it necessary to provide a summary of the status of knowledgeof the presence of microplastics and possible implications.

Improved understanding

VKM will base the work on, scientific literature sources including reports from the European Food Safety Authority, EFSA, and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), published in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

Both these reports focus on microplastics from fisheries, aquaculture and seafood. VKM will also assess microplastics in the rural environment and in land-based food.

The objective of VKM’s opinion is tocontribute to improved understanding of boththe sources of microplastics and which kind of consequences this type of pollution might have.

The steering committee of VKM will be responsible for the opinion. It will be published in October 2019.
