The Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food Safety (VKM) has performed a health and environmental risk assessment of the pesticide Milbenock, containing the active substance milbemectin.
The Committee concludes that health risk to users of the product is low, providing they wear protective equipment.
When it comes to environmental risks, VKM concludes that milbemectin seems bioavailable in both soil and water-sediment systems. There is a minimum to medium risk of toxic effects on aquatic organisms, provided sufficient buffer zones to surface water are applied.
The risk assessment is carried out at the request of The Norwegian Food Safety Authority. It will be used as a part of the background material to decide whether the product should be approved for sale on the Norwegian market.
The usage proposed is as a foliar spray for control of mites and leaf-miners in the production of apples, pears and strawberries (after harvest), and on ornamental plants grown in greenhouses or outdoors.
