The predatory mite Amblydromalus limonicus - health and environmental risks

Report no:

Ordered: 07.01.2020

Publishing: 15.11.2020

Key message:

The Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food and Environment (VKM) will assess potential health and environmental risks posed from the use of the pesticide Limonica, where the predatory mite Amblydromalus limonicus is the active organism.

VKM is making the assessment at the request of the Norwegian Food Safety Authority.

Amblydromalus limonicus is used as a biological control agent of thrips and whiteflies.

VKM will examine:

  • prevalence, especially whether the organism is found naturally in Norway.
  • the potential of establishment and spread of the organism in Norway, by using it in greenhouses and outdoors.
  • any uncertainties about taxonomy making it difficult to assess the risk.
  • whether the pesticide and organism pose a risk to the health of those who use it.

The Norwegian Food Safety Authority has received an application requesting the right to use a preparation containing the organism in Norway, hence the assignment.

The project group in VKM consists of:

Johan Stenberg, VKM, Academic Leader of the Scientific Panel on Plant Health.

Anders Nielsen, VKM, member of the Scientific Panel on Alien Organisms and Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).

Micael Wendell, VKM Secretariat, Project Manager.

VKM's Scientific Panel on Plant Health is responsible for the risk assessment
