Key message:
The Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food and Environment (VKM) shall assess the potential risks to health and the environment from the release of genetically modified farmed salmon in field trials.
The Norwegian Environment Agency has commissioned this risk assessment.
The Norwegian Environment Agency is the decision-making authority for the release of genetically modified organisms for research purposes and has received an application from the Institute of Marine Research to release genetically modified farmed salmon in sea cages.
The field trial is expected to last approximately one and a half years and will be conducted by the Institute of Marine Research. They have applied for the release of 303 genetically modified fish and 485 control fish (salmon that have not been genetically modified).

The risk assessment will be submitted for approval by an interdisciplinary approval group and is scheduled for publication on September 29, 2023.
