Shall calculate the intake of vitamins and minerals

Commissioned: 27.03.2025

Publishing: 30.09.2025

Key message:

The Norwegian Food Safety Authority has commissioned VKM to calculate and assess the intake of vitamins and minerals in the Norwegian population.

The background for the assignment from the Norwegian Food Safety Authority is that work on establishing common maximum limits for vitamins and minerals in food (fortification) and food supplements has recommenced in the EU/EEA. VKM's assessment will be part of the basis for the Norwegian Food Safety Authority's work on developing regulations for fortification and food supplements.

The common maximum limits in the EU will be based on intake calculations carried out by EFSA in the opinions for the dietary reference values (DRVs) and tolerable upper intake levels (ULs) for vitamins and minerals.

The intake calculations that form the basis for EFSA's opinions mainly do not include Norwegian intake data, and the Norwegian Food Safety Authority therefore needs insight into whether Norwegian intake data deviates significantly from EFSA's intake calculations for some of the vitamins or minerals. The calculations and assessments will be made for all age groups.

VKM has established a project group that will prepare a draft assessment to respond to the assignment, and the assessment will be approved by the Panel on Nutrition, Dietetic Products, Novel Food and Allergy.

The assessment is scheduled to be published 30 September 2025.
