Knowledge Gaps in Food and Environment Sectors

Report no: VKM Bulletin 2025:12

Published: 26.03.2025

Key message:

While working with VKM's scientific assessments, we summarise relevant research within a topic. We also identify where there is a need for more knowledge, and these insights are now gathered in one report.

The Scientific Committee for Food and Environment (VKM) is an interdisciplinary and professionally independent scientific committee that delivers scientific assessments about food, food production, and the environment.

We make assessments which are mainly commissioned by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority and the Norwegian Environment Agency. They use the assessments when they develop advice, grant permits, develop regulations, and provide input to governmental ministries.

During the work with our reports, we review relevant and available research. In this work, we also identify where there is a need for further knowledge. This is routinely included in each report, but we also compile these needs in an overview.

We have now published a summary from the reports for the period 2022-2024.

“Knowledge gaps can affect conclusions in scientific assessments. The purpose of the report is to provide an overview of areas where we have found knowledge gaps. This is useful for our commissioners and can also be useful for research communities and those who fund research,” says Tore Tollersrud, Director of VKM.

The report is published by the Secretariat of the Scientific Committee for Food and Environment (VKM).
