Export of ospreys from Norway to Switzerland: assessment of the risk to the survival of the species

Published: 03.06.2020

Key message:

The export of until 12 ospreys from Norway to Switzerland is most likely not going to be detrimental to the survival of the species in the wild.

That is the conclusion of a scientific risk assessment, a CITES Non-Detriment Finding (NDF), prepared by VKM.

The birds will be part of a program for reintroducing ospreys to Switzerland.

VKM has assessed data on population size and trends, conservation status, habitat status and other biological characteristics, in relation to the level of international trade and management strategies.

The Norwegian Environment Agency, which is the National Management Authority for the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of fauna and flora, CITES, requested the report.

VKM is the national Scientific Authority for CITES and prepares NDF-reports in line with methodology published by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and CITES.
