Key message:

The export of one live individual of red panda from Kristiansand dyrepark to a zoo in the Czech Republic is not going to be detrimental to the survival of this species in the wild.

That is the conclusion of a scientific risk assessment, a non-detriment finding (NDF) prepared by the Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food and Environment (VKM).

VKM assessed the conservation status of the species, including red list status, conservation measures and species management legislation.

The female red panda and both her parents were bred in captivity, thus the export is not going to harm the wild population of red panda. Furthermore, zoos play an important role in conservation of this species.

Miljødirektoratet, which is the national management authority for the Convention on trade in endangered species of wild fauna and flora (CITES) in Norway, requested the NDF.

VKM is the scientific authority for CITES in Norway, and prepares NDF-reports in line with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and CITES guidelines
