Main message:

The Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food Safety (VKM) supports EFSA in their proposed supplementary Guidance Document on allergenicity assessment of genetically modified (GM) plants

On 26th of July 2016 EFSA launched a public consultation on a draft Guidance Document. Interested parties were invited to submit written comments by 25th of September 2016.

The document from EFSA will provide supplementary guidance on specific topics:  

  1. Adverse non – allergic immune reactions to Foods 
  2. In vitro protein digestibility testing 
  3. Levels of natural endogenous allergens in GM plants and their conventional counterparts

These topics are not fully covered in the existing guidance document on risk assessment of GM plants for use in food and feed.

The VKM Panel on genetically modified organisms commented on behalf of VKM on the 23rd of September 2016.
